MTV 1515 Broadway NY Say It Aint So, MTV Leaving Its Times Square Studio
Sad but apparently true. While I can’t say I was exactly sad when MTV cancelled TRL, I was at least hoping that they would continue taking advantage of their prime New York real estate lease. Apparently they didn’t even offer poor Alexa Chung the chance to do her show there.

For the last decade the studio has been iconic for the MTV brand. Who doesn’t remember exactly where they were when “MTV Live” first premiered or the first time they saw N’Sync shut down traffic in Times Square? No?

I can’t really blame them though. According to people that know more about the subject than me, the cost of the lease was $450 a square foot for the studio on-top-of $1,000 a square foot for the 1,624-square-foot space at street level. Totaling $11.6 million a year in rent.

MTV hopes to begin a new era in daily talk and social media on Monday with “It’s On With Alexa Chung,” the eagerly-awaited replacement for “TRL.” The network describes the noon show, hosted by the half-British, half-Chinese ex-model and TV personality, as “a live, daily talk/variety show featuring interviews with the hottest celebrity guests and musical performances from mainstream and indie artists, along with Internet-found talent and topical pop culture news.” Jack Black and Michael Cera, along with musician Soulja Boy, are Monday’s guests.

Finally! TRL is going off the air after 10 years. Thank god. For some reason I’ve always hated the fact that TRL was still on the air. It was good in the beginning; n’sync, backstreet boys, 17 year old Britney, etc. But we have just grown apart. I think it’s for the best – it will be good for both of us. I would imagine even the hosts are happy to be done with it.
