SI Managing Editor Chris Stone spoke to EW about the cover:

“With a story like this, you’re looking for a cover that’s not only powerful, but also self-explanatory, an image that requires as little language as possible to completely understand. In the instance of this photo, the fallen marathoner, the drawn gun and the eerily smoky backdrop told the entire story. I considered going with no language at all, but ultimately settled on ‘Boston,’ figuring the reader could intuit and fill in the rest.”

Kate Upton, 5 feet 10, was born in Michigan but raised in Florida. Her hometown is Melbourne, on the state’s east coast.

In Florida, people walk around in their flip-flops, bikinis and jean shorts, so I’m very comfortable in a bathing suit.”

The 2012 magazine cover is her second time appearing in the annual SI issue. Last Upton was chosen as rookie of the year.

Eight Olympic gold medals… three Sports Illustrated covers in a month, another impressive Jordanesque feat. Michael Phelps was on the cover of SI’s July 28th Olympic preview issue (natch), the cover of the Aug. 18th issue (splashing to victory) … and here he is again, in an exclusive shot for the magazine, with all his gold on the the Aug. 25th cover. And no doubt, the Baltimore swimmer will round out the collection with SI’s Sportsman of the Year cover in December.

  • The return of Television! Just in time too, as I recently caught myself eagerly anticipating the next episode of Celebrity Rehab.
  • The 2008 Toy Fair is in town… yup
  • ‘Where the Wild Thing Are’ clip causes dweeb uproar online as well as “nostalgia induced smiles.”
  • The Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition came out, marking the halfway point on my list of “Winter Highlights”. Right after Superbowl and American Idol auditions and before Oscars and The Westminster Dog Show. (Anyone else rooting for Willy, the Tibetan Terrier?)
  • Mysteries are solved with more mysteries as Lost continues to befuddle audiences. Only 2 years and 32 more episodes until all your questions are answered.
  • Kanye West gets beat with a shovel by a women in lingerie for his latest video “Flashing Lights.” Did you really expect anything less from the guy with lyrics like “Stove on my waist turn beef to baddies, And i ate it cos I’m so at it.”

They say love makes the world go around, so Happy Valentine’s Day. And let’s check out “Sports Illustrated’s” annual swimsuit issue. Californian Marisa Miller is on the cover, making her seventh appearance in the issue that will be read by 69 million, and generate 250 million page views online. Auto racer Danica Patrick and NFL cheerleaders are making their debuts. Miller, who is a big sports fan — she told ESPN that the team colors she would wear in body paint would be those of the San Francisco 49ers — appeared on David Letterman on Monday night as a three-story billboard of the cover was unveiled. Swimsuit models rang the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday. It may be time to invest: when an American model appears on the cover of the swimsuit issue, the stock market does nearly twice as well as when a foreign model does.
