The upfronts are over, and the fall TV season is in place. Some thoughts:

  • Shows we’re happy to see picked up: Friday Night Lights, Chuck, Life, Lipstick Jungle, Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles, Boston Legal, How I Met Your Mother, Reaper.
  • Shows we’re sorry to see go: Moonlight, Men In Trees, Miss Guided, Back To You.
  • New shows that could become favorites: Fringe, Life On Mars, 90210, 11th Hour, Own Worst Enemy, The Ex List.
  • Shows that moved: Boston Legal (Monday at 10), Life (Friday at 10), Without A Trace (Tuesday at 10), Eli Stone (Tuesday at 10), The Unit (Sunday at 10).
  • Show that switched networks: Scrubs (NBC to ABC).
  • Second-half shows we look forward to: Lost, 24, Dollhouse, Office spinoff, Merlin.
  • Best network: Fox with 24, House, Bones, Prison Break, Terminator, Fringe.
  • Best night: Monday with Gossip Girl, Heroes, Chuck, CSI Miami. Boston Legal, Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Prison Break, Terminator.
  • Toughest hour: Monday at 8 with Gossip Girl vs. Chuck vs. Big Bang Theory/HIMYM vs. Terminator
  • Juiciest hour: Wednesday at 10 with Dirty Sexy Money vs. Lipstick Jungle vs. CSI New York.
  • Rookie showdown: Life on Mars vs. Eleventh Hour, Thursday at 10.

I’m down with NBC’s new fall-winter-summer schedule, and here’s why:

  • “Friday Night Lights” returns for a third season. DirecTV airs 13 new episodes, beginning Oct. 3. NBC gets the run in 2009.
  • “Lipstick Jungle,” which grew more addictive each week, is back in the fall.
  • “The Office” gets a spinoff, debuting after the 2009 Super Bowl.
  • “ER” signs off with a 15th season.
  • “Saturday Night Live” airs special “Weekend Update” half-hour editions of three Thursday nights leading up to the November election.
  • “Chuck” (staying on Mondays at 8) and “Life” (moving to Fridays at 10) get second seasons, and hopefully solid promotion during the Summer Olympics.

Promising new dramas:

  • “My Own Worst Enemy” star Christian Slater as a man with two personalities.
  • “Crusoe,” based on the Daniel Defoe novel. “Equal parts “MacGyver,” “Castaway” and “Pirates of the Caribbean.”
  • “Kings,” an exploration of the David vs. Goliath struggle. Starring Ian McShane (”Deadwood”). Michael Green (”Heroes”) is the executive producer.
  • “Merlin,” set in a 21st century Camelot.
  • “The Philanthropist,” the world’s first vigilante philanthropist — a renegade billionaire who uses his wealth, connections and power to help people in need.
  • “The Listener,” a “telepathic procedural” about a 24-year-old paramedic who can read people’s minds.

Good news from NBC. The network has picked up Chuck, Life and Heroes for the 2008-09 season. No word on Friday Night Lights, so keeping mailing those mini-footballs to the misguided NBC execs. NBC also set a schedule for new episodes of popular series.

  • My Name Is Earl will return with a one-hour episode on Thursday, April 3.
  • 30 Rock, The Office, Scrubs and ER will all be back with new episodes on Thursday, April 10.
  • Law & Order: Special Victims Unit will return with fresh episodes on Tuesday, April 15.
  • Law & Order resumes with original episodes on Wednesday, April 23.

CBS will keep viewers happy with post-strike episodes of 15 series. The comedy shows return in mid-March, followed by dramas. The list with new episodes planned:
