Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk are back to their wicked ways, and we’re starting to get goosebumps.

FX president John Landgraf on the network’s new dark drama from the men who created “Nip/Tuck:”

American Horror Story is a wildly brilliant original series. Ryan and Brad are evil geniuses.”

American Horror Story, due in October, will star Dylan McDermott (“The Practice”) and Connie Britton (“Friday Night Lights”) as a couple who move their family from Boston to Los Angeles to, as FX put it, “reconcile past anguish.”

The drama also features Oscar-winning star Jessica Lange (“Tootsie,” “Blue Sky”) in her first regular TV series role, along with Frances Conroy of “Six Feet Under”

Back in February, when FX announced the pilot, Falchuk said:

We knew this project was perfect for FX. That network put itself on the map for its big, bold, some might say slightly twisted shows, and the creative freedom we had on NIP/TUCK was incredibly liberating. John [Landgraf] immediately got what we were trying to do, which was bring the horror genre to television but with our own subversive sensibilities.”

Stuff I learned by reading about three of TV Guide’s “25 Most Influential People In TV:”

* Ryan Murphy is developing a period piece for cable about the history of sex.

* Seth MacFarlane is interested in doing a science-fiction show.

* Neil Patrick Harris would like to host a variety of talk show. “I’d love to be like Ed Sullivan and show people really cool acts.”

Glee” has been a big hit for Ryan Murphy but let’s not forget his bloody good old show. “Nip/Tuck” begins its sixth and final season tonight on FX, at 10, right after “Glee” at 9 on Fox.

Where the story left off: Dr. Christian Troy (Julian McMahon) learns his lab results were mixed up, and his cancer is in remission. Sean (Dylan Walsh) is involved with Dr. Teddy Rowe (Rose McGowan who replaced Katee Sackhoff, unable to continue in the role because of scheduling problems with “24.”)

What happens next: The recession hits the practice as the boys hire a new surgeon (Mario Lopez). Troy is ready to party again, buys a boat and divorces Liz.

The outlook: There are 19 episodes left (ten this fall, the last nine to be scheduled in 2010) to complete 100 in all. The audience has declined from the show’s heyday, but the true fanatics will keep watching to see what wackiness Murphy has in store for the stretch run.
