It’s the marquee event of the Winter Olympics, perhaps the most pressure-filled competition in all of sports. The Olympic women’s figure skating final takes place once every four years, and the athlete who can master the moment is golden forever. Everyone else will have to wait four more years for another chance. Thursday night in Vancouver, the showdown will be between South Korea’s Kim Yu-Na, the leader after the short program and the reigning world champion, and Japan’s Mao Asada, the 2008 world champion who’s in second. In Tuesday’s short program, Kim and Asada put down extraordinary performances, back to back, that left experts speechless. The two rivals will skate back-to-back again in the free skate, this time with Kim going first. Kim, who dazzled the judges skating to James Bond music in the short program, will skate to Gershwin’s “Concerto in F,” a light, classical piece that highlights her artistry. Asada, who plans two make-it-or-break-it triple axels, will skate to Rachmaninoff’s “Bells of Moscow.” Brian Orser, the former Canadian star and Kim’s coach, is happy to see Kim and Asada skating back to back. He told AP: “I like it. It’s a nice comparison of the two programs because they’re different, different styles. Mao’s program is a little darker, has more drama. Yu-na’s is a little lighter.”
