fall preview tv head The Great Fall Preview Part Two: Television
There are no words to describe our elation over the return of scripted television this month. It’s been a long, hot summer, with far too much time in the sun, lounging, loafing, freeloading. We eagerly anticipate the crisp fall air and racing back to our respective plasma screen televisions right after dinner to soak up the next chapter in some of our favorite stories.

BUT, there are also NEW addictions and stories (and some rehashing of old-school fare) to enjoy as well. Here’s a sampling of the autumnal offerings…

Melrose Place

MelrosePlace The Great Fall Preview Part Two: Television

The CW / Premieres 8 September @ 9pm

Sweet wounded Jesus, it’s back! Of course after the grand success that was “90210″ this was an obvious next step for The CW. We still don’t understand the appeal, but if the children like it there’s not stopping the crazy. This updated ‘Melrose’ changes up some of the major characters for the younger crowd. We enjoy Michael Rady (“Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”) but Ashlee Simpson-Wentz (or at least her character) has yet to woo us.

glee twitter Fringe and Glee Tweet peats
TV and Twitter: are they made for each other? Fox thinks so, offering “tweet-peats” of “Glee” and “Fringe” this week. “Fringe” stars Josh Jackson and John Noble, along with executive producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman, will be tweeting on Thursday @FringeOnFox), discussing last season’s penultimate episode, and on Friday, “Glee” cast members Lea Michele, Kevin McHale, Mark Salling, Cory Monteith, Amber Riley and Chris Colfer will be tweeting a director’s cut of the show’s pilot (@GleeOnFox).

Glee kristin Kristin Chenoweth Guest Stars on Glee!
JoyHog fav, Kristin Chenoweth will be guest starting on another JoyHog fav, ‘Glee’ this Fall! That match seems almost to perfect.

E! Online got the scoop.

“The cast also dishes on guest star Kristin Chenoweth, appearing in episode four as April Rhodes, who turns out to be quite the alcoholic and bad influence on the glee club members. Looks like the former Pushing Daisies star fills a spot in the club when leading lady Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) takes a break.”

It should also be noted that Chenoweth will also be a guest judge on this season’s ‘Idol.’ The more Kristin the better.

FOX
Special Preview Tuesday 19 May @ 9pm ET/PT

Extended Preview

Whenever we get DVDs of new shows from the networks, they are accompanied by very stern language: don’t post it on the blog, don’t share it with chums, this disc will self-destruct as soon as the credits roll. And, like the good little media outlet that we are, we always pay mind to these warnings.

Except this time. I was super-thrilled when I learned that Ryan Murphy’s new show had been picked up for 13 episodes on FOX. The other shows he has created (‘Popular’ and ‘Nip/Tuck’) ride this fine line between a funny yet dark reality and the fantastical and absurd. I was a big fan of ‘Popular’ when it first came out and still harbor the DVDs (if you haven’t seen it, have a look at the brilliant Christmas special in season one). And a musical comedy is the perfect thing for Mr. Murphy. I MAY have shown a couple pals so they could share my exuberance over this new program.

‘Glee’ takes places at a small high school in suburban Ohio, where all the John Hughes-y stock characters are present. And the resident Spanish teacher (Broadway’s Matthew Morrison) wants to take over the tiny island-of-misfit-toys glee club to inspire a few awkward teenagers. The cast is great (especially Jenna Ushkowitz from “Spring Awakening” fame), the music is invigorating and the struggle of the underdog is always worth the journey. The pilot perhaps leans too heavily on Morrison’s character and some of the effervescence fades away between the three musical numbers, but hopefully subsequent episodes will put the kids front and center. They’re the ones to watch, and when this show kicks into gear, it’ll make you stand up and cheer. Critics say that all the time, but I actually did it in my apartment when I watched it by myself. So there.
