When the billboards first hit the L.A. streets for “Surrogates,” it all looked super-cool. When the trailers came out, it looked…well, far less cool. Set in the not-too-distant future, the world has become a place where everyone and their mother has a second version of themselves – a younger, hotter, robot who roams the outside world while the real people are just slovenly and unshaven at home, connected to their surrogates via some goggle-y bits. But a new weapon is zapping the robots and the human versions are being killed back at home. Bruce Willis plays a cop (shocker) who has personal demons which make him push further than he should with the investigation. There are bad boys on the force and in the corporate world as well, and lots of running and shooting and electrocuting take place. The production design is very colorful, Boston was never meant to look quite so technicolor but that’s a style choice, I suppose. The story is based on a graphic novel so it’s pretty zippy, but the story and what-if-ness are much more intriguing than the movie itself. It happens.
