Tired of all those vampires, werewolves and zombies on television? Do you know Bo, the “Lost Girl” in SyFy’s superb Canadian supernatural-fantasy import about a succubus?

Following in the tradition of strong female leads in genre shows — Xena, Buffy and “Dollhouse’s” Echo — Bo, wonderfully played by Anna Silk, discovers she’s a succubus (a woman who uses sex to feed, heal and kill) when she drains her high school boyfriend to death during her first sexual encounter. She tries to escape her past and her nature, but finds out she’s part of the Fae, an ancient race living among the human race. The Fae attempt to enlist Bo but she doesn’t trust its motives and decides to make her own way in the company of BFF Kenzi.

Bo has issues that Buffy never encountered… mainly her complicated relationship with sex.

So there’s lots of sex in “Lost Girl.” (YouTube is loaded with videos.)

In an interview with The Watercooler, creator Michelle Lovretta said the “challenge was to create a fun, sex-positive world that celebrates provocative cheesecake for everyone, without falling into base stereotypes or misogynistic (or misandristic) exploitation along the way.”

Lovretta established a few internal rules for her show… a manifesto that other TV showrunners would be smart to copy.

1. Sexual orientation is not discussed, and never an issue

2. No slut shaming – Bo is allowed to have sex outside of relationships

3. Bo’s male and female partners are equally viable

4. Bo is capable of monogamy, when desired

5. Both genders are to be (adoringly!) objectified — equal opportunity eye candy FTW.

SyFy is currently aired season two of “Lost Girl” (Fridays at 10), and recently announced it had picked up season three for 2013.
