“30 Rock” is doing its much hyped live episode tonight. Actually it’s doing the same show twice — once for the East Coast at 8:30 and again for the West Coast three hours later. Joyhoggers are poised to watch on both coasts.

Is a live show supposed to be funnier? Not unless someone messes up… and is that what we want to see — mistakes? “Will and Grace” did a live episode in season eight, but I can’t remember anything memorable about it. “The Drew Carey Show” did three live episodes.

“30 Rock’s” stars Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin and Tracy Morgan are used to working without a net, having performed live on “Saturday Night Live.” They sounded excited in interviews. The network will use a seven-second delay, in case Baldwin curses or Tina flashes the audience.

The “30 Rock” writers came up with a good setup for tonight. “TGS” — the show-within-the-show — is also going live in the episode. There’s madness on the set as Liz’s 40th birthday is forgotten, Tracy decides to break character all night, and Jack tries to cut down on alcohol.

Matt Damon and Jon Hamm are guest stars.
