WHAT’S ON OUR PLATE

  • Diagon Alley. Second Harry Potter theme park will open at Universal Studios Florida in 2014.
  • Randy Jackson. Original American Idol judge is leaving the talent show after 12 years.
  • Jacob and Sophia. The most popular baby names for 2012.
  • Jack Bauer. Fox is in talks to bring back Kiefer Sutherland‘s long-running action drama 24 for a limited run.
  • She & Him. Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward continue their musical magic on Volume 3.
  • 1600 Penn. We’re glad NBC canceled Whitney, Guys With Kids and Up All Night, but the Josh Gad political comedy is a loss.

24 season 8 Tick, Tick, Tick. . . Time Runs Out On 24

So now we’ll be saying goodbye to “Lost” and “24″ this spring. Fox made it official on Friday, canceling “24″ after it ends its eighth season in May. Not a surprise, and, no, NBC will not be picking up the Keifer Sutherland thriller. But there will be a “24″ movie, possibly as early as next year. Jack Bauer will live to fight another day. “24″ accomplished a lot — it helped make Fox a major network and changed TV drama forever with its innovative format and Hollywood-style production values. Like “Lost,” “24″ was a show that loyal fans followed with a passion. Full blast. No repeats. And, if you couldn’t follow it weekly, you bought the DVD.

How will “24″ wrap up its final season? Executive producer Howard Gordon told THR:

“We’ve taken a risk in the last eight episodes. It was challenging to the writers to the actors. We’re taking a risk, the show has to do that. Without spoiling what’s to come, it’s pretty dark and complex and a place that was uncomfortable for us to write and for some of the actors to act. We really swung for the fences.”

24 review 24: Season 8: Review
FOX
Premieres on 17 January @ 9pm (2-hour) and
18 January @ 8pm (2-hour)

DVR addicts take note – the start of ’24′ is a two-night, four-hour extravaganza, so please align your devices accordingly. You’ll be pleased to know that the nature of the beast remains the same eight years later. Jack Bauer still has the reflexes of a jungle cat and can sniff out the bad guys faster than anyone at CTU. As is often the case, he is in a good place before the clock starts, and enjoying time with his daughter, granddaughter and son-in-law; he has plans to move with the three of them from Manhattan back to Los Angeles and his flight is only hours away. Well, we all know that ain’t gonna happen. The trouble begins with a threat on a visiting president during U.N. peace talks and it only gets sloppier from there. Joining the good fight are Katee Sackhoff as a systems analyst, her fiancé played by Freddie Prinze, Jr., the snarky return of Mary Jane Rajskub, Cherry Jones as the US President and Elisha Cuthbert and her hubby, played by Paul Wesley (‘The Vampire Diaries‘). As usual, once one mess wraps up we’re already deep into the next one, and the thrills keep coming. If these first four episodes are any indication, the eighth season of ’24′ will certainly not disappoint.
