Saturday Night Live this week said goodbye to its 38th season… and Bill Hader… and (it appears) Fred Armisen… and (it seems likely) Jason Sudeikis.

Emotional moment No. 1.

Stefon, Hader’s signature character, gets a sensational cinematic sendoff in a The Graduate-themed church segment. An upset Stefon leaves the Weekend Update desk, telling Seth Meyers he’s going to get married. Meyers follows him to a church and breaks up the ceremony with surprise guest fiancee Anderson Cooper. Seth and Stefon return to the studio and reunite with Update favorites for a giddy goodbye.

Emotional moment No. 2.

In the show’s final sketch, Armisen returns as English punk rocker Ian Rubbish and performs the original “I Had Lovely Night” with Hader and Sudeikis. They are joined on stage by Aimee Mann, Michael Penn, Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols, J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr., Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, and Carrie Brownstein.

Emotional moment No. 3

The warm cast hugs in the on-stage signoff. This is a close-knit group.

Hader Quits ‘Saturday Night Live’

Hader, who joined SNL in 2005, told The New York Times:

“It was a hard decision, but it has to happen at some point. It got to a point where I said, ‘Maybe it’s just time to go.’”

Hader is the second regular to announce his SNL exit. Seth Meyers is taking over Late Night in 2014. Both Jason Sudeikis and Fred Armisen are reportedly considering leaving as well.

SNL’s season finale is this week.
