The Buzz: Having passed a litmus test with his appearance in Captain America: Civil War, it’s clear that the movie-going universe is ready for Tom Holland as the new Peter Parker only three short years after Andrew Garfield’s noble attempt at the role. The movie is riding a wave of warm and enthusiastic early reviews, a projected $100 million opening weekend in the U.S., and a sequel planned for July 5, 2019.

The Buzz: After taking us into the crossfire of the Mexican drug war with his Oscar-nominated documentary Cartel Land, filmmaker Matthew Heineman brought his camera into Syria for his follow-up, City of Ghosts. The film tells the story of Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently, a group of civilian journalists and activists who risked their lives to report on the atrocities of the Syrian Civil War. Having premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews, Heineman’s film is being considered a definitive account of the conflict and one of the most important films of the year.

The Buzz: This true-crime documentary with Herzogian flourishes heads off the festival circuit and it appears likely to generate a new wave of momentum as it hits theaters and streaming, where this story of an idealistic couple who runs afoul of a crumbling but steadfast community in Northwestern Spain should provoke discussion.
