I didn’t know if I was watching the Tonys or the Oscars. Movie stars were winning all the awards. Scarlett Johansson. Denzel Washington. Catherine Zeta-Jones. Did they deserve the prizes? I don’t know. Like the great majority of viewers, I didn’t see the performances. And that’s what’s wrong with theater. Why isn’t there a pay-per-view TV channel devoted to theater so entertainment fans across the country can watch Broadway shows. We live in a high-tech, On-Demand world… and I demand theater. Think of all the new fans and additional revenue Broadway would get if it televised its shows. Rant over. Anyway, I can only go by what Broadway insiders said, and the consensus is that there was no consensus on the individual winners. On the other hand, “Red” (best play), “Memphis” (best musical), “Fences” (best play revival) and “La Cage Aux Folles” (best musical revival) were winning favorites. CBS’ Tony telecast, which was killed by the Celtics-Lakers NBA Finals in the ratings, was fast-moving and entertaining. Sean Hayes did a fine job as host, from his work on the keyboard in the superb opening number to his take-that-Newsweek tonsil-hockey kiss with Kristin Chenoweth to his gag costumes (Annie, Spider-Man). Green Day highlighted the musical numbers. “Glee” fans got to see Matthew Morrison and Lea Michele sing… but not together. Michele seemed to be auditioning for the Barbra Streisand role in the upcoming “Funny Girl” remake with her intense “Don’t Rain On My Parade.”
