awkward teen Holiday Gift Guide ‘09: Those Awkward Teen Years
Teenagers are, without a doubt, the most difficult creatures to shop for. Their tastes come and go so quickly. So we’ve gathered up a few items that may work for all those on your list who are trapped in the in-between years.

Jonathan Safran Foer is the author of two incredible novels: “Everything is Illumintated” and “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” (which, btw is JP’s most favoritest novel ever) and lives in Park Slope, Brooklyn, which is also the birthplace of JoyHog. His third book is an investigation about the way in which are hamburgers are made. The teen years are usually when the vegetarian bug bites, and this book offers more than just a nibble.

Fight Club: 10th Anniversary Edition: Blu-Ray Edition

You haven’t really seen Fight Club until you have scene it in HD (there is so much detail in the blood that I never even noticed before). The packaging for the Blu-Ray isn’t all that impressive and the special features are pretty ordinary (although I do urge you to check out “Insomniac Mode”) but let’s be honest, EVEYONE should have a copy of this film, especially in Blu-Ray. After all, it was ranked in the top 50 of Entertainment Weeklys’s “The New Classics.” Don’t you need a copy to show your children?

The Kevin Smith Collection: Clerks, Chasing Amy & Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back

Can you believe I have never seen any of these movies until now? What business do I have running an entertainment blog? None, probably. Thankfully all these films have just been released and packaged together in the wonderful Blu-Ray format all with enough bonus content the make a Michael Bay DVD jealous. The special features on the Clerks DVD is especially impressive and include a particularly interesting featurette on restoring the Clerks film as well as “The First Cut.”

Who better to help celebrate the jovial awkwardness of one’s formative years than Ms. Pink herself? Her live CD/DVD has twelve audio tracks and a full DVD set which includes performances of ‘Just Like a Pill’ and ‘So What.’ A nice stocking stuffer indeed.

Say Anything: 20th Anniversary Blu-ray

Let this film be a lesson to all you pimple-poppers, Tweeters and romantically inept dimwits. If you want to woo the girl (or the guy) you need to be bold. Remember, “the world is full of guys, be a man.” “Say Anything” is perhaps the best thing in the John Cusack collection. So grab a copy and take notes (i.e. texting ain’t romantic but a little Peter Gabriel on the boombox sure is…).

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

While the editorial staff here at JH may not have been too keen on this movie (http://joyhog.com/2009/05/01/x-men-origins-wolverine-review/), it’s important to note that when we were teenagers we didn’t have the most discerning taste ourselves. Hey, The New York Post thought this movie was “Spectacular!” and that’s pretty much in line with the mindset of a 13 year-old boy, so there you go. One more distraction to add to the list.

Dubya’s reign of terror may be over, but the comedy keeps comin’. The brilliant Will Ferrell can give most any kid or teen the church giggles with a single glance. His one-man Broadway show will keep grown-ups and teens alike cackling into the new year.
