wonderland photo1 First Look: Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland! Ahhhh!

USA Today has the first look at Tim Burton’s ‘Wonderland.’ Check out the first look at Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen. The article also sheds some light on Burton’s re-imagning of the classic story. Apparently, Wonderland will be a squeal. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?

The traditional tale has been freshened with a blast of girl power, courtesy of writer Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast). Alice, 17, attends a party at a Victorian estate only to find she is about to be proposed to in front of hundreds of snooty society types. Off she runs, following a white rabbit into a hole and ending up in Wonderland, a place she visited 10 years before yet doesn’t remember.

What!? 17 year olds getting married?! An Elijah Wood looking Johnny Depp? Blonde Anne Hathaway? Burton, you have gone to far this time….

Check out Anne Hathaway as The White Queen and some concept art after the jump..

This picture is dealing with material that has yet to receive a worthy screen adaptation. Even the likes of Disney and Henson missed the mark with Carrol’s beloved work – lets see if Burton, famous for bringing wonderland up the rabbit whole and into our world, has what it takes to take us back down. These stills / concept art seem loyal to the source, (fantastic, silly, edgy) yet original.

In the mean time i refer to the central park statue to be the only work BASED on Carroll’s work that holds any merit of its own. Awesome for climbing and picnics.

ps H.B. Carter as the ‘red Queen’? sure looks like the ‘queen of hearts’ to me.

    another thought:

in this random responder’s opinion, the main reason ‘alice’ has consistently failed to appeal as a screen narrative (accept to drug-trippers) is because of Alice, herself. Worse than unlikable, she is wholly uninteresting. In this way, Burton’s choice to revisit the character years and years later (while not all together original) is another promising move. Perhaps by this point, Alice will have developed a personality.

    I’m keeping my fingers crossed
