I was really hoping to just watch one episode and be done with this ‘Raising the Bar’ business. Mark Paul Gosselaar has super-long hair and he exhausts me. In the TNT show which premiered last year (produced by Steven Bochco), Gosselaar plays Jerry Kellerman, an overly-idealistic New York City public defender who just will not rest or keep his yap shut until justice has been served. Other names in the cast include Jane Kaczmarek as a fickle and unyielding judge, and Gloria Reuben as the head of Kellerman’s office. Then there’s the D.A.’s office at the other end of things, and the cases, the personal lives, and everything in between are constantly caught in the crossfire. Gosselaar is overzealous in his battles for sure, but I managed to run through all ten episodes, even rooting for him at the end. Oh, and if you glom onto season two as I seem to have done, he chops off that messy mop of hair in episode 2.1. It’s not like we need another show about cops or doctors or lawyers, but they keep coming. This is basically ‘Law & Order’ junior – except no crime scenes and more personal attention to the characters. At least it’s summer and I can let a few new shows into my DVR…
