Esquire’s collector’s edition 75th anniversary issue is out and getting a lot of buzz for its “world’s first E-Ink cover” (on limited copies). But there’s plenty to talk about and read inside, notably its list of “The 75 Most Influential People of the 21th Century.” Esquire says “it decided to look forward, at the people and the ideas that are laying the foundation for our new century.” There’s no way to know how the list will hold up in 2099, but looking back at 2008, some of the lifestyle/entertainment choices — in real, smudgy ink — are: Paul Thomas Anderson, Danger Mouse, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, Marc Jacobs, M.I.A., Mehmet Oz, Jeff Koons, Guillermo del Toro. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Thom Yorke, George Clooney, Oprah Winfrey, Dave Eggers, Will Smith, athletes LeBron James, Tiger Woods and Alex Rodriquez, and Scarlett Johansson (”because every century needs a bombshell.”)
