JoyHog may very well be the only website to have a PBS documentary and a song called “Sex on Fire” on the same list. But hey, that’s how we roll… Here is our list of things that are awesome right now.

Just the fact that their MySpace ( page describes their sounds as Indie / New Wave / Electroacoustic is enough to entice many a purveyor of fine tunes. From Williamsburg, they come, and they’ll be playing at the Decibelle Music and Culture Festival in Chicago on 23 September. The boys of the band will also be doing a little extra work on ‘Gossip Girl,’ so keep your eyes peeled. Have a listen to “Just Impolite” and “The Dark in You” for a taste.

Sports Night: The Complete Series

Shout! Factory / $60 / Available on 30 September
It’s the 10th anniversary DVD set of this vintage (ok, vintage-ish) Aaron Sorkin. Most of the JoyHoggers were in high school when this show premiered (that’s how young and cute we are), so perhaps we didn’t partake as much as we should have. It’s a half-hour show with a laugh-track about the staff on a late-night New York sports show. Though the format is a bit wonky for those of us who came to know Sorkin for ‘The West Wing’ and ‘Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,’ you’ll note some of the same classic bits: a pilot episode where one of our leads is about to get fired, people trying to sit in chairs that aren’t there, and a few other slight homages to Josh Lyman. The cast here is Josh Charles (‘In Treatment’), Robert Guillaume (‘Benson’), Felicity Huffman (‘Desperate Housewives’), Peter Krause (‘Dirty Sexy Money’), and Joshua Malina (‘The West Wing’).

Schooled by Anisha Lakhani

Hyperion / $24
A debut novel about the privileged lives of Upper East Side students. Wait a minute! Well, we won’t make comparisons to any hot TV shows because everyone else has already done that. But clearly this is a genre that isn’t going anywhere, and is way better than ‘90210.’ Perhaps east coast snobbery is the new black… Anyhoo, this tale follows Columbia graduate, Anna Taggert through her wide-eyed journey to land a gig at a private school, before she learns how the little brats operate; before she gets SCHOOLED!

The Presidents Collection

PBS Home Video
Since we’re all fired up for November, may as well look at the most celebrated and/or controversial Presidents ever to hunker down in the White House. PBS’ American Experience always does good stuff and this is no exception. These DVDs take a look at the lives and legacies of Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, John Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush. Don’t be an idiot. Watch this!

January Jones in ‘Mad Men.’

Perfectly captures the discontented beautiful young wife of sleazeball, Don Draper. Where’s her Emmy nomination?

‘Fringe’ Location Titles

Not that we care to envision the grody goings-on of ‘Fringe’ actually taking place in our nation’s favourite cities, but we like the way they title them. BOSTON! Very dramatic.

Risky Business

Had we known back in 1983 what kind of media maelstrom Tom Cruise would create in the new millennium, would the ladies have been so enamored with his tighty-whities, dress shirt and Ray Bans? Hard to say. Mr. Cruise has got the goods to lure a lot of us in, so we may as well surrender and partake in the “Risky Business” of it all. We never quite understood the Rebecca De Mornay attraction, but that may be what comes of having seen her later films like “The Hand that Rocks the Cradle” first. At the very least, it will remind us of Friday night sleepover selections and the great times that were the ’80s.

Kings of Leon: “Sex on Fire”

Album in shops on 23 September / RCA Records

I suppose we must thank the comical musings of Joe Escalante during morning drives in L.A. for introducing us to Kings of Leon. Sure, they have three albums behind them, but we’re a little slow on the uptake, okay? Somehow, their new single is both really exciting and weirdly this sorta throwback sound. Like maybe it should be on the soundtrack to “The Lost Boys.” In any case, we’re jazzed about hearing the whole album, and until then, Indie 103.1 can play ‘Sex on Fire’ all day long. We’re cool with that. Check them out on SNL this week!

Because who doesn’t like movies about poker? I mean c’mon! And here we’ve got Bret Harrison (our lead dude on ‘Reaper’) and Burt Reynolds and Shannon Elizabeth. Okay, so we haven’t actually watched it yet, but we really want to!
