Because Steve Zahn is a funny guy. Because that bit with the eyelid tattoos in the trailer made me giggle. Because a comedy about a screwball television crew trying to tape a wilderness special has lots of potential for funnyness. Well, sadly, despite all these things and the best intentions, “Strange Wilderness” just isn’t worth the hike. The show’s host, Peter Gaulke (Zahn) isn’t the brightest crayon in the box, but he’s got spunk. That and slipping ratings for his 3am broadcast threaten imminent cancellation of the program. So, let’s gather a group of half-wits and enjoy the ride. Jonah Hill, Justin Long and Harry Hamlin are among the folks we travel with, and for that we are thankful. There’s a bit with a huge-ass wild turkey that echoes the humor of stuff like “American Pie,” and some folks get ripped in two by Pygmies, and then there’s a lot of other doofy-ness that ensues along the way as these kids try and capture Bigfoot live on camera. The bloopers are fairly enjoyable – more so than the film, actually – yet the comedy just isn’t funny enough or raunchy enough to keep us from wanting to watch something else instead seeing this one to the end. Funny actors, funny idea, not-so-funny a movie. Huh.
