I just had breakfast: two slices of toast. According to National Geographic Channel’s “Human Footprint,” these two slices are a sliver of the 87,520 slices of bread the average American will consume in his or her lifetime. “Human Footprint,” which debuts April 13 at 9 p.m. with several repeats scheduled throughout the week, contains several more amazing stats explaining how we use the Earth’s resources. The two-hour special, which is hosted by ABC’s Elizabeth Vargas, uses creative visuals to help the viewers get his mind around the big numbers. Total showers in a lifetime is 28,433. The producers recruited volunteers to lay out 28,433 rubber ducks spreading from the second-floor bathroom of a house, down the stairs, out the front door, across the yard, and through the neighborhood all the way to a nearby pond. The NatGeo interactive website is fun and educational as well. Time for lunch: I’m making a sandwich, cutting into my 87,520 some more.
