Kanye West and Amy Winehouse deservedly head the list of nominees for the 50th Grammy Awards. Rapper West, who takes his third shot at best album after losses to U2 and Ray Charles, received eight nominations while controversial British retro-soul singer Winehouse, honored in the four marquee categories, got six.

The Foo Fighters grabbed five nominations, including mentions for album and record of the year. Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z, Timbaland and T-Pain also all got five.

There were surprises and snubs. Jazz legend Herbie Hancock made it into an intriguing album of the year competition for his Joni Mitchell tribute. Bruce Springsteen (“Magic”) was shut out as West, Winehouse, Foo Fighters and Vince Gill nabbed the other noms.

A look at the top categories. The Grammys are Feb. 10.
