Did you know that in the world of Aaron Spelling, you could rent a two-bedroom apartment in Melrose Place for $800 a month? Of course, that was in 1992 (apparently before the advent of men’s belts). That season came out on DVD a few months ago, and now we’ve got the second season to gasp at. Heather Locklear has sunk her claws in, and is taking over every inch of the place. Then there’s Allison (Courtney Thorne-Smith) getting Keith’s creepy “the-call-is-coming-from-inside-the-co-op” calls. There’s the divorce between Michael and Jane after his affair with Kimberly (Marcia Cross hasn’t aged a day!), and a whole lotta other crap that goes on. It’s dark, it’s sinister, and just when common sense tells you to turn the damn thing off, they flash some nipples or cleavage across the screen and we just forget like Homer Simpson being distracted by a donut. It’s a soap opera and there’s a pool in the middle of it all. Despite all the trashy contrivances and moments of “Oooh! Snap!” there is no denying the fact that Melrose Place is a place we’d all like to live. Or at the very least, sublet for a 5-episode arc so we can see it all
