Let’s touch base on the positive aspects of this film since it breaks oh-so-many barriers in modern cinema. “Idlewild” has the perfect ingredients for a good film, including Andre 3000, Antwan A. Patton, Terrence Howard, Ving Rhames, Macy Gray and Cicely Tyson. The opening sequences alone are worth the price of admission, seeing as they have all the punch, pizzazz, yahoo and wow needed to get your booty shaking between the cupholders. The editing hones in on the crazy days of the speakeasy. Church (and not bible study, bible-thumper church) is the place where it all happens. Inside, they meet and greet, kill, sing, dance and generally mess about. I would have loved to see more in the church and listen to the music created by these apostles of the new century, but as Nelly Furtado once said, all good things come to an end. This chance-y film is worth seeing mostly because it shapes and paves the way for a new beginning in cinema.
